Hello fellow duck owners...

I have raised a mallard duck (cross breed) and she has imprinted on me due to circumstances out of my control. I have no problem with it, I have taken her to the shops in a shopping basket and over to friends houses for the past month.

She is almost fully feathered, and has grown exponentially. I visit my friend on a regular basis for the odd braai (BBQ) and a swim. I never allow Dorris (my duck companion) into the pool because I am afraid it will harm her.

Will it do her any harm to spend about 30 minutes in a chlorine pool every two weeks or so? And will my friend have any bacteria issues from the odd poo or two?

Thank you

I can only comment on the friends pool and filter getup with our pool we back flush the sand filter as needed. Sure she might need to adjust her chlorine levels later but I see no harm to humans in a maintained pool. You would surely need the friends permission.

When we lived next door to folks with a pool their transient Wild Whistling Duck Pair would go in there often.

We let the one and only duck I’ve ever had swim in our pool, but we didn’t use chlorine. We used Baquacil.

I knew nothing about ducks and my step father gave the duckling to my boys. Once “Petey” was fully feathered we let him swim, only because he said that ducks didn’t poop in water. Well, that couldn’t be further from the truth. :lau So beware as that is the first thing the duckie will do. ;)
