Duck Info For Beginners

I found that they ended up a lot more friendly if you spend a lot of 1 on 1 time with them during the first few weeks of life. I would have their little brooder setup in the garage and take one duckling at a time into my bed for about an hour per duck per day and they all ended up quite friendly and only 1/5 ended up not enjoying the pets once he got older.
Oh, I didn't do any one on one time. They got so distressed and peeped like crazy when separated that I felt awful and put them back immediately. I had them in our spare bedroom, and actually sat in their brooder with them all day for weeks. They slept on my feet and were so sweet!! But, strangely one of the ducks I adopted as an adult is just as friendly as the baby who slept on my feet for 3 weeks after hatching.

If you wanted them you could just buy an incubator, or even just use one of your chicken hens as an incubator for hatching eggs from ebay. I see call duck hatching eggs listed on ebay all the time, along with all sorts of other duck breeds.
Thank you! I didn't even think of that! I may try that. If I did, I would have to buy the incubator, just because only one of my hens goes broody. Last summer she tried nesting in the woods, and would only come back every three days! We finally broke her broodiness.. Thank goodness. Thanks!

Yeah they did that the first few times for me but by the 3rd it 4th snuggle session they just relaxed and snuggled.

That's great! I noticed that my chicks that I get nearly every spring DO get very loud and distressed when they are separated. I think I will make sure to just spend time with all of them together!

I think in general they like being pet just because they enjoy grooming, but most ducks never get a chance to realize how much they like it because they have bird brains and are scared of everything 🤣😂
