Duck leg wrapped with baling twine 😔

Update: we now have a peg-leg princess. I kept her up a few days after the accident, she got around fine after, and yesterday, two months to the day it happened, I went out to find her with a peg leg. Little bloody, so I put her up in a crate with a friend, and am looking into a silicone leg cover and prosthetic foot.

Have any insight for OP?

I'm putting vetricyn and bacitracin on it and have her in clean chips. Vet wrap is a good idea if she'll keep it on. I found some silicone finger sleeves on Amazon that I can slip on once it heals. Looking for prosthetics now!

You are doing exactly the same treatment as I did when my hen lost both feet to frostbite. In addition, I wrapped the stumps with vetwrap for a few days after each foot came off to make sure the open wounds clean and sterile. After protective scabs formed over remaining healthy tissue, I left the stumps uncovered as they healed.

The recovery process may be different with your duck since she is aquatic. Several months after my hen's stumps healed, she got pressure sores on the bottoms of each stump. In hindsight, this was mainly due to the fact I didn't pad the stumps well enough to bear her weight as she healed and became more active. In addition, I think her stumps got wet under the vet wrap, and the moist warm environment allowed bacteria to take hold. (I kept her stumps vetwrapped except for weekly stump inspections.) I couldn't see the developing pressure sores until one day I happened to look in a mirror while holding my hen and saw the sores on the bottoms of both stumps. The moral of the story is even after your duck's stump heals, be sure to examine it weekly from all angles to make sure all is well.

One final note. After I posted about my hen's pressure sores and asked for ideas for better padding, I got many excellent ideas from BYC members. One person suggested a silicone mold/sleeve that you are planning to try, but added that the silicone needed to be kept dry. The idea about a silicone mold is in post #309 in this thread.

Please keep this thread updated as your duck heals, because due to her being aquatic, you may take a different approach to keep her stump healthy, and that will help future duck and goose owners that face a similiar situation. Good luck with her; I will watch her healing progress in this thread with great interest.🙂

I appreciate the pictures, I was very curious to see how your poor duck was doing!
