Hi. I have a mixed flock with a runner duck/drake pair and they've been fine with the chickens until this spring when the drake started to chase one particular hen. He was always slow and distracted so I never thought it would come to anything, however now I think the chicken was caught by it and mated. She is afraid and has blood in her droppings and bleeding at her vent. I seperated the drake and duck into the enclosed run and brought the chicken inside. I'm going to get rid of the drake.

What can I do for the chicken? She is still eating and drinking. Will she just heal on her own?

Be careful she may prolapse. You can't keep chickens and ducks together, I hope you learned your lesson... Put some neosporin without painkillers on her vent.

Drakes have a very long and twisted retroserrate penis like a corkscrewer.
Mating chickens or other birds than female ducks will leave the victims innards disrupted, he might even rip them apart and pull their innards out.

This is what the victims have to deal with: https://external-content.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=https://steemitimages.com/DQmTC1RjaYiJaxLwDpUtvsnMaW1adyo8wToZZx2SHxpfA78/9059334235_98bb93b4a6_b.jpg&f=1&nofb=1
I was not expecting that. I knew they had corkscrew-shaped penises, but I didn't know the retroserrate part. Poor, poor duck hens.

I feel awful about it. I was trying to wait until the little duck grew up so it could be a companion for the lone duck once the drake was gone. I waited too long unfortunately. (yes, i know. my fault.)

She is about a year and a half old. Lays sometimes, though the shells of her eggs have always been weird even though she gets layer feed and extra calcium from the little pieces of cuttlefish or whatever. I think her laying mechanism just isn't good. Seperate issue however.

yuckbum2.png this is her

and the vent pic. pretty sure she was trying to poop at this point. bad pic quality but kinda difficult to get a good picture of that angle >_> something poked out. i put it back in and later applied antiseptic cream that was said to be ok for chickens.

she is just standing about now. her butt is looking really nasty though.

Thanks for the link. It's mostly about eggbinding tho which isn't her problem... I gave her a calcium tablet in case.
