Duck Newbie

Greeting BYC members! Just wanted to say thank you for all your posts. I’ve already gotten so many ideas on how to convert all the materials pictured into a duck house and run! I have 4 Pekin ducks that I’ve had a little over a week and I have to say I’m shocked at how fast they are growing.

I live in Central California and am planning on building a 6’x4’ duck house to protect them from predators at night and a 10’x12’ fully enclosed run with a pool and draining watering stations for them during the day. I recently rescued a German Shepard/husky puppy mix that I’m hoping to train to help protect them if I want to free range them while I’m working in my gardens and vineyard? I live on a lake so I’m also curious to see if the ducks will follow down and back from it?

The pup will need extensive training to recognize your ducks as his pack mates and protect them. As for the ducks returning home from the lake, they should once they've been home to their duck house. If wild ducks visit the lake they may try to join them.

Another Pekin lover!!! They are my favorite breed I have 2 of them myself (Aflac and Geico) Yes they do grow quite fast, just wait another week you'll barely recognize them.
