Hey Everyone,

I couldn't find an exact answer to this so any advice would be helpful.

We would like to get a flock of ducks in the spring but I am planning our pen/ area we want to keep them. We currently have a pond on the property near the house which we would like them to use for water.

So I know they need a duck house, and I don't want to fence off the entire pond. So I was wondering do I have a fenced in area and let them out every day to access the pond, or would they be able to get out by themselves?

What I am worried about is a way for them to get away from predators if needed.

Anyway any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!
Tim

Predators will be a problem unless you can monitor them at the pond. They will be able to get in and out on their own. A floating shelter anchored in the middle of the pond would be super nice!

We have a member here who eventually let her ducks have access to their pond. She hasn't them any longer they all got picked off. Only problem with allowing pond access is getting them locked up at night, so many have trouble getting them off the pond. and you can't have assurance they will use a floating duck house either if given a choice. I know ponds are so nice for water fowl. But they also come with problems since most domestic ducks can't fly to avoid a predator that can swim and many do for a nice duck dinner.

I didn't think of the predators that can swim :hmm So unless they are supervised just give them a little pool, they will still be happy and safe.:)
