Just a quick tip when using sand/dirt with rocks/gravel:
If you don't want them to mix into a loose "concrete", which they will eventually, consider putting a layer of landscape fabric/cloth between them. This will prevent them from letting sand fall through the gravel or the rocks down into the sand.
I did this all around the outside of my aviary where i dumped pebbles over sand/dirt and also did the same thing inside wherever i wanted to line pebbles and rocks around things.
Home Depot and Lowes sells rolls of the landscape fabric for a few dollars.
