I have a duck pipping day 25 and the incubator humidity dropped overnight, it 'pipped' but hasn't broken through the internal membrane (which seems tough, because too dry maybe?) can it still breathe through an unbroken membrane or should I make a hole? And why is it so early? I thought my incubator was erring on the side of too low but hatching early is the opposite?

What is your incubator reading? Are you using separate calibrated thermometers, & hygrometers to monitor your temperature, & humidity more accurately?

incubator temp reads 37.5 and the other little thermometres in it read from 34-36 (they're lower though). humidity has been 40-50 most of the time (unless it drops overnight, but was erring on the side of too low rather than too high humidity since my last couple hatches didn't lose enough water)

who knows how calibrated they are after all this time though, I just usually average between them.

yeah when you put it that way I guess it's not super early... I think I had momentary panic from realising I haven't even set up the brooder yet!!

Little dude hatched day 26, now day 28 and still no one else has pipped though I have seen the eggs rocking. Hoping it won't be alone for long, cause he is LOUD. :D

So I looked and there was a dark patch on the bottom side of the egg which looked like it tried to pip in the middle? Which was literally on the ground. Idk if it got turned by the other chick or was just confused, but pretty sure it's dead.

any way to prevent malposition like this or is it just bad luck? they even had X O markings on them so they were turned the 'correct' way after all that -.-
