Hi guys
I was wondering if anyone could point me to any simple online resources on this, to give me some idea of what's recessive, what's sex linked, etc for mallard derived duck plumage.
Particularly the white plumage..
I started out with one white drake, assumed pekin as he had been hatched by a khaki Campbell, but the people who had the khaki Campbell's also had Pekins, they started with only purebred of the two breeds.
Anyway, since starting with this one white drake, and various other ducks and drakes, of mostly khaki Campbell and khaki Campbell X, I have ended up with a whole lot of white ducks and drakes. This pekin is the ONLY pure white duck I have ever acquired, all the other pure white ducks and drakes have hatched from various combinations of my ducks and drakes.
The first one hatched here, was a pure white duck, hatched from a khaki Campbell or khaki Campbell X mother and fathered by either a khaki Campbell, khaki Campbell X, the white assumed pekin, or a khaki Campbell Indian runner X drake.
A second white drake was hatched out a couple of months later from a girl I suspect is a khaki Campbell pekin X, and the father is most likely to have been any of the above mentioned drakes.
After the above ducklings hatched, I got some more adult ducks - that i was told were khaki Campbell but looked to be more silver appleyard, plus a dark girl who looked mostly Cayuga. 11 ducks incl the Cayuga(?) girl, and appleyard looking girls, and 1 appleyard looking drake.
Since then various clutches have resulted in another 3 pure white ducks and another white drake. Most if not all the white ducks/drake were from eggs laid by either one of the appleyard looking girls, or the Cayuga looking girl. Fathers unknown, lol (though at this pint my originally randy white pekin was in a very committed relationship with a khaki Campbell X girl who kept him well under her little thumb, and was not often seen mating anyone else..)
All have the orange beaks and legs etc. Then just recently, I hatched a drake who is pure white apart from one, and I mean literally ONE, tan brown feather below his right hip. He also looks to have a little runner in him, as he often kinda stands up the way runners do. He is still young, but fully feathered. From the same recent clutch I also have another pure white girl, a stocky wee lass, who looks more pekin than her brother.
Can anyone help me understand the genetics of these white ducks and drakes that keep popping up? Have they all come from the one white assumed pekin I started with, or are there recessive genes hiding in some of my other ducks and drakes. Basically one pekin, and numerous mostly khaki Campbell X ducks and drakes have made a whole lotta white ducks and drakes...
