Duck Pond Cleaning

Hello everyone,

At Christmas I built a pond for my 5 ducks its about 8ft long, 4ft wide and 4ft deep. They absolutely love it! Because in the UK our birds can't free range because of bird flu they are having to be kept inside the pet. This means they're spending all day in the pond and it's getting very mucky! At first I thought I'd drain and re-fill the pond every 6 months or so but I'm having to do it every 2 months. I have a filter which does collect about 50% of the dirt however there is still a large amount of waste not being collected. I think when they go back to free ranging they won't spend as much time in the pond so it'll be cleaner however for now I'm looking for alternatives to clean the pond other than draining it.

Could I have plants in it without them being obliterated by the ducks? (don't forget it's only a shallow pond and I'm pretty sure they can reach the bottom with their bills.)

I've seen people use clams and oysters to naturally filter the waste water? Has anyone got any experience of this?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!
