So as of now my four white ducks use a small childs pool I purchased from dollar store. But I see so many pics of really cute pond built. My question to you is how do you keep pond from smelling? I empty my smsll pool and fill with fresh water daily and it stinks sooo bad.

I have a 1000 gallon pond for my 5 ducks. I drained and cleaned it and filter box yesterday. Should be good to go for another 3 months or so for the hot summer. Maybe longer. It's been quite some time since the last time we drained and cleaned.

I have the water moving, so it makes it not smell. My pump moves water to the filter box and it falls back into the pond.
If the water is just sitting, then it will start to stink.

Filtration and aeration... that is the only way to keep the water clean and safe for the ducks without constant refilling. There are many sites online with instructions for building koi ponds, just be sure and increase filtration for ducks as the bio load is much greater. A filter falls will help maintain oxygen levels and flow.

Hi!

Sorry to but in - do you know how expensive it is to build this filtration system?
We have a pond in our new house's garden but it's not got running water and not currently used for the ducks that we inherited with the house.

it seems such a waste to have 3 ducks and a pond but they aren't using it?!

but it seems to expensive to create it properly.

any ideas?

It depends on where you live, what type of equipment you buy, and whether you DIY or hire an installer. How is this existing pond constructed? Is it natural, concrete, or rubber lined? Will make a big difference on the cost to retrofit. For a standard pond with bottom drain and waterfall, the filterfalls ($400-500), skimmer ($300-500), UV ($200-400), pumps ($250-500 ea, you need at least two), and piping will cost $1500-2000, and that's just for the equipment. For ducks you really need a bog to help process the bioload. I would also add a second bottom drain to dedicated filter if I built my pond again, which is at least another $500-600 depending on the type of filter you choose. You want to buy quality stuff as it will be running 24/7 and cheap components will break down. You will not want to skimp on the filters because ducks make a mess. Just go to one of the online pond supply stores to get an idea of the different equipment that's available. We have Savio components. Cost will also depend on the design and landscaping. I designed the pond and dug the hole myself, but hired a pond contractor to install the equipment. It is nice to just call someone when there is a problem and they have to come fix it. You will save money if you do everything yourself, though. There are tons of awesome videos on YouTube on how to build a koi pond...
