So we just moved and we don’t have a fully fenced backyard- that isn’t a problem except the kids in the neighborhood love to come look at the ducks! I made sure to have a place the ducks can hide in if they don’t want to be seen, and the run door is locked so they can’t pet the ducks.

Anyways, they are some stubborn children who insist because “the ducks at the pond eat bread” my ducks would eat bread. I had to explain that even if they eat it, it’s not good for them! I think they understood but I would really like to deter them feeding the ducks food that I don’t approve of. I want to leave a sealable container outside the run filled with a small portion of treats everyday that the children could toss in to satisfy their desire to interact with the ducks.. At first I was thinking just their duck food, but if the kids toss it on the ground and it gets wet, it smells!! I would do something like mealworms or crickets but those are expensive... Would frozen peas go bad sitting outside all day and bringing leftovers in? Is this a bad idea in general?

My ducks go nuts for corn. And I suspect they'd love shelled peanuts. Any sort of whole seed "scratch" is a treat rather than a feed, and it's easy to find in feed stores and keep with the duck feed. (Note that they don't like oats)

Corn is a great idea! And just scratch in general. I may get a small bag when I go out.

Hello..I would tell the kids to only feed the Ducks if your Home.
Romain lettuce, Cherrios, or grass if a good treat.
Glad the kids like the Birds, although it could become an issue?...

I’m happy they like them too! All neighbors have asked for eggs. I told them that, but they were really disappointed and I get the feeling they may feed them anyways:barnie
That’s why I wanted to provide something myself so they don’t bring over junk. Some Cheerios are a good cheap option and I know my ducks like them! I just have to put a only handful or less for them.

Yes only a small amount or you'll be taking your ducks to weight watchers.

Are you going to put up a fence to keep any one from having access to your ducks? It's nice to have visitors when your home but maybe not when your not there to supervise.

The partial fence right now is chicken wire, we do plan to continue it. I was very happy yesterday when the kids knocked on my door to ask to see the ducks even though they could’ve easily looked at them without my permission. Hopefully they continue to be respectful and don’t get too comfortable.

You sound like you will do fine..Once the weather gets better you can buy the kids a box of popsicles for following the rules about feeding the Ducks. They will listen then..
