My 1 year old Ancona female. Yesterday she was fine. Today I go out and see this. Is it what I've seen people call prolapse. What i it? How do I care for it? How does it happen? Ugh help?! I've never seen this. What do I need to do besides make sure it's clean? Is this from a male? She did lay an egg this morning hers are a Different color than the other who is laying right now. What in the world.

No issues yesterday. She's eating drinking walking Round with her flock. Her mating males are in another pen Way from her.

It could be an egg or collapse membrane or even sloughed tissue from the oviduct. When you see a prolapse, there's an obstruction causing it.

A prolapse is a prolapse no matter the species of poultry.

ok thank you. so she is in her own crate. I stuck her in an Epsom salt bath she hated it. Took her out toweled her off. applied witch hazel, hydrocortisone and bacitracin. Tried to push the prolapse back in but she didn't seem too keen on that so I let her be.
She is eating, and drinking. She did try to drink the Epsom water when I let her go to switch sides. ugh. but she has pooped a good amount, its dark brown as usual. No white fluid coming out. She was extremely vociferous, as she is our big talker anyway. She was very good sitting while I performed all this but was by no means happy. I will check her again in a few hours.

Is there anything more I can do for her other than keep her in a crate but near the flock?
She did lay an egg today, so does that mean something else? Is this a common problem? Is she not consuming enough of something I need to add?

I ask because I am not able to go to a vet , and there are no aviary vets near. Any bird sanctuary I have asked has stated you have to surrender your bird, they will not give out advise. Which is not an option.

I also crushed a calcium pill and gave it to her via a feeding tube. I only have calcium plus D. I will need to go get the other type of calcium that was mentioned I assume unless what I have would work?
Calcium Citrate I believe it was. Is that was usually causes this issue?. Is she is not eating enough calcium? I have a separate bowl of oyster shell calcium set up . should I be doing something differnet? Thank you all for the advise. 20220816_145443.jpg 20220816_145450.jpg

Calcium citrate is best because it absorbs quickest of all the forms of calcium. But in a pinch any form will be fine. The main thing is you've gotten it into her. She needs a good dose, at least 550mg per day for this crisis.

It's not possible to know what caused this. But calcium is what can fix it. It encourages contractions so the obstruction can be expelled. Keep checking on her and keep the prolapse moist. Smoothing on the witch hazel and the cortisone can help with keeping it moist and keeping bacteria at bay and with pain.

Laying an egg may not be the end of the prolapse if there is another egg behind this one or tissue of some sort. Once the obstruction clears, the prolapse will retract.

Thank you very much all good information i knew nothing about. I just checked on her and she is quiet. She is not laying down but on one leg with her head tucked resting. she has pooped again in the cage so she is expelling. thats a good thing. I gave her the one pill earlier 500 mg. I will have to try to go out later if possible. If not i will definitely get a new form tomorrow that is at least 550mg of calcium. I will also put more bacitracin on later on top of the hydrocortisone cream so that it stays moist longer. Hopefully in a few days it will start to look better. I go back FT Monday to work and wont have the capacity to check on her every few hours then..

@azygous has already given very good advice. I did notice you said you have plural males. How many males is she with usually on a daily basis and what is your overall male to female ratio? Was she with the males prior to the prolapse? Something to consider is that duck penises are corkscrew shaped. When a female duck is repeatedly being over mated multiple times a day by different males it can cause a prolapse because of the unique shape of a Drake's penis.
