Duck Virgin with a few questions

The boy had his mind made up he wanted ducks, he saved his money, read books from the library, did his homework. Well, to make a long story short, he is the proud carer of 6 Khaki Campbells, and 3 Roens. So today, he asks me, "Dad, how long before we get eggs?" I say maybe about like chickens so maybe by July. So that is the question, as he has returned the books to the library. I figured just as easy to ask here as to do a search.

BTW- these little ducklings are awesome.....I like them so much better than our baby chicks. Never thought I would say that. The boy new exactly what he was doing!

Well, the real answer to that question is that you never know!

Some start to lay as early as 16ish weeks, the average is around 20-22 weeks from what I have read, however mine started at 11 months (two weeks ago!

). It really does vary quite a lot I think. You also have to take into account the time of year and amount of daylight hours - if a bird starts to mature during the winter, it may put off starting to lay until the following Spring, whereas birds hatched earlier in the year, for example in March as we are now, may start at the end of summer/early autumn, so maybe late August if you're lucky...

I am hoping that mine start laying around 20-25 weeks...That seems about average.

P.S. I was right too! My SO was against getting ducks, but now that we have them we are soooo happy! Chickens just are not as cute or have as much personality. Without even trying they seem to like me a lot and follow me all over the yard

Some one needs to show the book on ducks to my ducks...the bit about starting to lay eggs around week 20 to 25. They are 30...yes 30 weeks old and im still waiting for 2 to lay

The hens I got last year I got as day olds on March 17th, and I got my first egg June 30 th.

I fyour khakis are good khakis.... they will lay first. They are the "leghorn" of ducks when it comes to laying. (and flightiness) And it is a guessing game. I had a flock of khakis and they started to lay after about 4-5 months.... but I have a mallard cross who took almost a year to lay.

Just lay back and wait. lol
