my pekin drake, forrest, has a broken toe. i just found out this morning, it's swollen, and one of the bones is sticking out of his middle toe. there aren't any vets that do poultry or birds around, what should i do? it impedes his walking a bit, and i think he's in pain. any help appreciated.

thanks

james

Is the bone poking up through the skin?? Poor Forrest... It must be very painful for him.

There used to be a vet by the name of Ridley up there- he would be pretty old now I think... ( I was last in Tamworth over ten years ago and dont recall him still working n the area then- but remember him as the vet we used when I was a child. ) Peter Best is another I remember as a great vet. Being that the injury is external and not to do with any organs with more specific issues in birds- a normal vet will still be able to help. Of course an avian specialist would be best- but under the circumstances- any vet may have to do. It may be very apparent where the break is- and xrays wont be needed- but he will need to have the wound cleaned out and the bone brought into a more normal position so it can heal. Pain medication can also be prescribed for him if needed- but the most imortant thing is keeping the foot clean to avoid infection as it heals.

oh... and just to add... I used to have a Pekin called Forrest too- I bought him from a hatchery and he had a deformed foot. Must be something about the name....

Ice it Ice it Ice it until red and numb and then amputate thats what I had to do for one of my hens and then another had a infected toe so I had to amputate

Ice it until the swelling goes down. If you can reset the bone and tapeit with bandage tape. If not amputate at the break.
Neosporian will keep it from becoming infected.
