Hello folks,

I have a drake that has had a on off limp for a while he is a year old now.

This last week he seems to be limping more and doing a lot of sitting down.

Does anyone have any suggestions on either a supplement to help ease his joints or pain relief?

Thanks,

Helen

Do like @Miss Lydia suggested and give him a thorough exam. There are medications that you can give for pain, but you should give him an exam first.

He is a magpie duck. I have checked over his legs and feet and there is no obvious sign of trauma. There doesn't seem to be any heat either. Although I think his 'bad leg' knee looks slightly more inflamed than the other this week.

He has had his limp since he was a few months old, he is 13 months old now, but as I mentioned this week slightly worse.

They have a bath with wide, gradual steps into it. Made so that it's easy for him to use.

I just wondered if there is a joint remedy, I suppose like out own cod liver oil pills :idunno

Do you have access to a vet? A vet could prescribe meloxicam.

Could be an old injury or he may have had a niacin deficient when young. If you can take him to the vet like @casportpony says you can get him something for inflammation or try adding some cod liver oil to his feed but resting him may help get this flare up better putting him in a smaller area and giving him pool time can help relieve the pressure on his legs and help .

Hi! You know I was thinking about this today cuz my girl has a limp. She had it yesterday and today. She has had it before and I have my guesses about it. I think, cuz she is smaller, when my drake mates her he hurts her legs. I don't see them mate much in the pool so that could be one reason. I also think that cuz we don't have steps going out and in to the pool when she jumps out she hurts her leg. Sally(my ducks) limp goes away after a couple days and she is good as new. I would not worry about it, but just in case give him some niacin. You can get regular capsules and just break it open and mix the powder in there food. You can buy niacin powder or brewers yeast and just mix that in there food too. I use brewers yeast and just sprinkle it in there food and mix it really well! You can also use liquid B-complex. @Miss Lydia can tell you more about it and how much to use. Good luck and keep us posted!

Wouldn’t hurt to put him on some B complex for some supplements . If any of mine come up with a limp I sprinkle Nutritional yeast on their feed for a couple days . Since this has been going on so long he may need something more. Something for pain and inflammation too.

Going along with what you said about pain...I know that chickweed can help with inflammation and pain. If you have some in your yard give it to him.
