Duck with broken leg

That's amazing!! How lucky he is to have an owner who gave him a chance and did the best for him. How wonderful that he's doing better. Honestly, I wouldn't trust that jerky vet to know what was wrong with him anyway--maybe he just had a bad strain or something. Or maybe it really was broken and it just is healing nicely. In any event, ducks are remarkable, and I'm so glad he's doing well. Keep posting updates--I want to hear when he's fully recovered.

What handsome fellas!!
When you think about it, it doesn't seem likely a duck would actually break a leg coming down that way. Maybe a strain, but broken bones are usually from dog attacks or some other major crushing force.
Too bad you can't get your money back from that wretched vet.

nice looking ducks!
i think he will be OK, as long as he is not kept in water all the time and i think he is getting more ground time now than at first.
good luck with him, he is lucky to have you

iamcuriositycat - after Pudge was under anesthesia at the jerk vets, I felt his leg and compared it to the healthy one.....something did feel different, but I'm no vet. I think he probably did really break it......but I hope maybe it's a hairline fracture. In any case, I will keep all here posted, and thanks for the nice words.

Dances with Ducks - thanks, they are good looking boys......yeah, actually I left the vet office quickly after saying a choice comment to the vet, and the wife paid him. Probably best I left.....

un-named - thanks........but I think I'm the lucky one.

No, the "vet" never gave him any, and I don't know what to give or the dosage.

I will ask zoo-recommended vet tomorrow though......

They are simply gorgeous boys!! And a nice little bachelor pad you have for them there too. Hope all goes well at the "good " vets tomorrow and they can suggest ways to treat his leg that isnt too painfull or invasive for him.

Pudge is gorgeous ( as are the others ) - and I bet has loads of character to go with his good looks. Seeing his gorgeous picture makes me even angrier that the vet could say such horrible things about him.

Most vets are careful with pain meds. The rational is that a pain free animal may do more damage to a ligament or leg then one that avoids using the limb. It's a grounding method. Sound cruel to some humans, but we stay off the leg if we are told to do so. Animals don't do that. Pain meds are fine, if you can constrict the animal but putting it into a cage for example. Good luck with your bird. Also remember to ask your vet for a payment plan, if it costs more. Many are willing to do so, if you give them a down payment or if they know you.

Called the nice vet today......he said as long as the bone is not sticking out then he will probably heal but with a limp....BUT, he also does do the pinning surgery. So now I have a decision to make, let him heal on his own or get his leg pinned.

Glad I now have options.....am leaning towards surgery.
