Duck with chickens

Long story short, I want a duck, wife wants a chicken. How many of each do we need to be adequate, can we get one of each and be ok (Doubtful)? I live in the AZ desert and we want them as pets only. What do you recommend?

I have a feeling that the wife will win this battle lol.

A couple of each would be best so that they don't get lonely.

If possible, get a couple as hatchlings and they will be there own flock growing up. If your wanting them for a specific need, I'll give some details on what breed to get if you want.
