Duck with rotting flesh

Great advice, except I agree with amiga that you shouldn't continue to use hydrogen peroxide. It damages healthy flesh, which is counterproductive in a wound like this.

My friend's duck was attacked by a racoon and she poured a bunch of H peroxide over it. The vet told her she really shouldn't have done that, because it killed even more flesh and made the wound much harder to stitch closed.

Hi Everyone. Just wanted to give an update on the white duck. He is alive ad appears to be doing well. I stopped using the hydrogen peroxide and removed all the maggots by hand. My husband had to hold him down while I picked all the maggots out, then we applied an antifly spray..permetherin to his body. It appears to have worked. I have not seen any maggots in three days. He is also eating and drinking. I have to hand feed him right now b/c his neck is in pain and he can't bend his neck to the ground. I think the animal that attacked him pulled off one of his neck muscles. At first I thought he would never be able to put down his head again, but I saw hi yesterday do it once, so I think with time he will be able to do it. As for as the rotting skin...I clipped one area off, but the other area was bleeding everytime I clipped it. So I left and now it is growing feathers on it, so I am hopeful he will be ok. Also, I let him sleep with his mate, but she wanted out of the cage in the morning and was causing havoc so I let her out. We were using ace bandages on him but now I am starting to air the wound. We have been spraying V??? ointment someone suggested on him and it appears to be helping the healing process. Today we are letting him hang around the flock. We wanted to give him a little quality of life back. We are keeping an eye on him and the flock is not hurting him. However, we only leave out for a couple hours and the flies do not seem to bother him. I wanted to thank everyone for their advice. It was really helpful. I am amazed at how much feedback I received. Hope all you chickee dees and ducks are doing well :)

Christine R - I figured that out After I did it. I switched to diluted Betadyne, but if I have to treat something like this again, I would probably use saline as has been suggested.

Glad to hear Ducky is doing better, Kweil.
