My pekin has a quarter sized hard scab over an area on his chest where the vet removed a hard scabby mess of ingrown feathers 2 months ago (when photo was taken). A lot of hard yellow plugs came out with the ingrown feathers --- assume they were sebum/keratin plugs, but is it possible they were the follicle?

Some downy feathers filled in the edge of the area, but will new feathers ever grow again if the scab ever comes off? Would the follicles have been damaged from tweezing the ingrown feathers out?

He also has a bald spot on his butt where he's gotten an ingrown feather abscess the last 2 years. Caught it early this year and the vet removed the ingrown feathers/sebum plugs before it got infected. But his butt is still bare after 2 months (pic is from 2 months ago right after it was cleaned out).

Will new feathers grow once he molts? Or will he be bald there forever? Is it possible the follicles were damaged? Last year the abscess ruptured, so the skin kind of burst. We are wondering if the skin is again over a mass of infectious stuff, and feathers are growing underneath, or will they just start poking through the bare skin on his rump?

Thanks!

I wish I knew more . . . I have seen this kind of thing once before, I believe, and I wish I could recall the details.

Have you posted on the Duck Forum? Often, duck health questions get posted there and can get more responses.

how did you figure out your duck had ingrown feathers???
my pekin has a huge scab in that same spot from picking, the vet said it must be an irritation, but it hasen't gotten any better.
