Duck with septic arthritis and runny nose

Tracy, yes, becoming septic is very very serious. I never thought of it as being the end result of arthritis though. But it does make sense now that I have gotten some information on it.

How is Apple doing?

The avian vet thinks she has a damaged tendon and that this will likely never completely heal and she will never be able to walk normally. She has a "cast" on her leg and is on anti-inflammatory meds. She has another vet appointment on the 26th. I'm not sure that the new meds and cast have helped, her leg is still very swollen and now she has a wound on her good foot.

Thanks for asking about her.

Well your doing your best to help her. sometimes it takes a while for the meds to kick in especially when the injury was there for so long, hopefully they will help along with the cast, what kind of wound on her foot? is it bumble?
Thanks for updating.

How did the appointment on the 26th go?

Thanks for asking about her appointment, I love that there are people concerned about a little duck.

The vet took off the cast and said the swelling in her leg is gone but when she felt her leg, she thinks that she is actually missing a tendon in her leg. I wasn't too happy with the vet, she said she was going to go get some meds for Apple but never came back to the room, so I wasn't able to ask any questions and she spent about 5 minutes with Apple. The vet and the staff were all kind of rude after I pointed out that my appointment was at 3:15 and it was now 30 minutes later. I'm really having a hard time finding a good vet that will see a duck in my area. I had to drive over an hour each way to see this vet and the previous vet I took Apple to, didn't really seem to know much about ducks and again only spent a couple minutes looking at her.

Anyway, she is now on rimadyl but still can't put weight on the leg. I figure I'll give that a few days and see if she gets better. Apple may just have to become a house duck if her leg is never able to get better. I put a mirror near her and she seems pretty happy with her new friend in the mirror.

That's sad to drive all that way and be treated like that. The closest avain vet to us I believe is 2-3 hrs away. so now way would I be able to use one, Just a shame this vet didn't take more interest. So maybe some nice warm water therapy plus on going massage and tender loving care from you and you'll see improvement enough she can be pain free at least. There is some good info on you tube about making chairs for our feathered friends to be able to get around using PVC. Thanks for updating give Apple a hug from us all who love ducks.

I saw a website with a duck with a pvc walker, I was thinking my husband might be able to make something like that. She isn't putting weight on her leg and she even has trouble standing up to get moved around. We were also thinking, maybe instead of a full cast, she just needs a knee brace, since she is missing the entire tendon.

Apple does still seem happy.
