My first malpositioned duckling forced itself out of the shell not long ago. At first I thought it was alright but then I noticed that there was blood on the shell and the liner. I looked at the duckling and saw that it still had a blood vessel attached!

It’s not oozing blood but I quickly stopped it from getting farther away from the shell and put it back in. I the put it in solo cup jail so it could not escape again. It looks like all but this cord vessel and a tiny bit of yolk are absorbed. I did manage to get a speck of nutr- drenched into the bill before I put it back in the bator. Maybe I should have moved the othe chicks to the brooder because it seemed to want to cuddle with them.

Am I going about trying to save this duckling right or is she a lost cause?

Any way you could get a picture of the blood vessel for us without disturbing the duckling? A little bit of blood in the egg is normal, but I have to say I've never seen a blood vessel still attached.
It sounds like you're doing an amazing job saving this duckling!

Here is an image. It looks a little better than it did when I put her in solo jail but I am not sure what to make of it. She did complain at me more this time when I put her back in it so maybe that’s a good sign.

I just checked the little one. She is still resting in her cup, the pronounced spot where the vessel is connected is still wet but looks less swollen. Put it back in solo jail after another speck of Nutra-drench. Seems to not be happy at first with jail time but settled down again. Seems much more tired than the other two at this point, which started to preen and get up and walk around.

Will check her again in three or four hours, because I need some type of sleep for work today.

You can clip that away from the shell with scissors or tweezers, just clip away from the body about an inch or two. Leave the string attached at the belly, it will dry up fairly quickly and fall off on its own. You may see a little blood drip, just pinch the end of the cord and it will stop.

Congrats on another duckling!

Oh! I thought it was dying! I clipped it she is back in the incubator drying off the rest of the way now. Seems happy to be out of her cup.

Her hatch mates started knocking everyone else around so I moved them to the brooder while she dries off. Pics to come on my other thread
