Hi - need some help with the ID of one of my ducklings. I am pretty sure that 6 are Muscovy - Father Black Pied (though his feathers are browning up - could that be sun?) mom could be chocolate canzie (unlikely to be her - was an old egg I found in her nest), no white other than head, or a black pied like the father.

But, a friend had some eggs that she found that didn't know when laid so could not eat - we put them under my pied girl several days after she started sitting on her eggs. The possible parents are, buff orpington drake, cayuga drake, welsh drake, cayuga duck, khaki mix duck, welsh duck. The owner assumes they did not breed with other breeds of duck, I did not assume this. The two cayuga looking eggs did not make it to hatching and my markings in sharpie got rubbed off of all the others. So here is a pic of my odd duck... I assumed muscovy but the chart said pied black drake x chocolate hen would not produce chocolate. Of course there could be other colours at play that I have no idea about.

This duckling is a little smaller than the others, more of a mamas duck but was last hatched, still only a few hours behind the others the feet where almost a solid dark brown when born but are lightening up. These pics are of one week old and bottom one this morning so 10 days for that one. My newborn pics just show a blob - mom would not let me near.

I am new to ducks so just learning about them all.

Thanks for your help in figuring out duck genetics. Who knew ducks were so much fun ?

You would think those weeds would look delicious to them. Would need an army of ducks. But if they help keep down the mosquitoes then I can pluck the weeds.

Any guesses on Sexes of them. I think the yellow one bottom left is a boy. Big bill, big head, bolder.

I am starting to suspect that the male is dark bronze pied, not black like I thought. The flock he came from was huge, an elderly lady got swamped with muscovies so the genetics are anything goes. I think he is gorgeous though. I am not sure about the pied female that might be the mother - her feathers are also browning but it is very sunny here and the brown canzie I have feathers are every colour of brown, but not pied.
