AAckkk! I am just horrified. Three of my kids and I left Wed for a 4H function and just returned later this afternoon. DH and middle son went camping, but close to home so they could take care of the birds at our house and the goats and lambs we have at a nearby farm. Anyway, we've had birds in the brooder almost continuously since Easter - what with the chicks I got from TSC and then the 4H birds (turkeys then roasters and then pekins). I had the kids move the roasters out with the other chickens Tuesday night. They are three weeks old and have most of their feathers so I figured it was about time. That left one brooder with ten little duckies in it - everyone else is outside.

We walked in the door today and DD asked "what's that smell?" and my stomach just fell. I went to the brooder to find three of our ten little duckies dead.

They had food but NO WATER!

So I call my DH and ask if they looked after the ducks. After a slight pause he says "I'm sorry - I totally forgot about them. I forgot to check the incubators too.".

I was already paranoid about the eggs in the incubators as our first attempt at hatching ended in disaster. I could just strangle him! What's worse is that since we got home we've lost three more duckies. This is the first year the kids were going to take ducks to fair and we've managed to kill nearly all of them.

I'll never be able to leave home again.

Ducklings can drink out of those rabbit waterers. You still want them to have something to dip their bills in to, but if the water runs out, that is a good back-up. Get a few so you can actually leave home in the future.
