Our duckling hatched with part of the yolk sac unabsorbed last night. We did assist but only because it was postioned strange "leg under a wing". Once it had a pretty good size hole we noticed the foot by its face. Anyways, there was a small bit of the yolksac still attached to it's tummy whwn it was almost out. Her bottom was still in the shell when we went to bed and all was ok. I got up at 3 am to check on it and there was yolk all over with watery blood too. Fast forward 16.5 hours later it is chiply mchip, eating, drinking, going potty, learning how to walk and no sign of any distress. The only thing is...the sac or what I believe to be the skin of the sac is still attached, hard and crusty. I've been googeling all day with no clear answers on what to do or if it will survive. I've read that it will fall of on its own when it dries up and it will survive, I've read that the duckling will surely die, I've read that I should soak it's bottom in a cup with water (we're beyond that point and have been since this morning, 4 hours after I found the duckling that way is when I finally found the article), I've also read that it could be the actual stomach etc etc. Please help. I want to do anything I can to give this bugger a fighting chance. It's had a wild ride these past 24+ hours and is still here, I want to keep it here. :)

Hey everyone! I just wanted to say that she made it! We lept it clean as you advised and decided it was worth a trip to the vet because it started to smell bad, was worried about infection. It was an umbilical hernia, took her to the vet 3 days after hatching, they cut the majority of it off and tied off the rest, that fell off 5 days later and her bellybutton sealed itself. The vet was surprised she made it since ducklings are so vulnerable, she's definitely meant to be here! Hoping this thread helps people out in the future since there was little information for me about survival when doing a google search.

Here's a picture of her just shy of 3 weeks old. :) She loves swimming next to our kayaks.
