hey everyone. I had a batch of ducklings hatch under 2 broody hens and I moved all but two of them to their brooder this morning since the other two just hatched and needed to dry off. I’ve been checking on them every so often today and I just checked again and something happen o the top of one of my ducklings heads!! Any ideas on what could have caused this??

Poor little guy :( My guess is a hen did it, and you didn't catch it when you initially moved them all to the brooder.

I would clean the wound out with saline solution if you have it, or just plain water if you don't, and then for now I would apply neosporin. He should be separated out with one other docile duckling while it heals to keep the others from pecking at it.

I would try to get your hands on a cream called Dermaclens. It's great for wounds like this and helps stimulate new skin growth. I've been using it ever since a vet gave me some years ago to use on a drake that was scalped by a predator. It works very well.

Thank you very much! I do have a hen whose very picky on laying her eggs where my broodies are so she’s probably the one who got to it since my broodies have never hurt their chicks. I’ll definitely consider getting that Dermaclens for this and future injuries.

Oh and remember, the Neosporin can't have pain killers in it as that can harm the duckling

It actually turns out that that's a myth :) A group of us were wondering about that a while ago and looked into it, and while -caine painkillers can be bad for birds in large doses, the small amount in neosporin shouldn't hurt. So, without pain relief is best, but if all you have is the kind with pain relief, it can be used.

Oh, well you learn something new everyday! Thank you for telling me :)
