Duckling - Naval Infection or Pasty Butt?

Interesting. OK, I turned a different duck upside down to get a look. It was the poop hole that was twisted shut with down. The vent, which I thought was caked poop, I put bacitrin on and left it alone. Got it right by accident.

I've searched for a good drawing showing duck anatomy and can't seem to find one on google.

I will try to get vitamins in him tomorrow. I will put some iodine on the "caked poop" spot and leave the poop hole alone. He's drinking on his own, so it's a step in the right direction. Would it hurt the rest of the ducks if I put ACV in their water along with niacin? Or just leave the ACV out of the equation for now?

I would leave the acv out just keep the poop hole clean, sounds like he may have gotten some poop on his vent, if that's the case it wouldn't hurt to put vasiline on it to help the poop roll off of it, but I think the iodine will be good for now.

If the poop hole was twisted and shut down that would explain why he's not doing so good, he probably was clogged. Alls you did was release the clog. Lol good job.. Just keep an eye on his poop hole make sure it doesn't get caked on again. He sounds like he needs more water because ducks when they poop omg, they squirt, comes shooting out like a rocket and if he's not shooting and it's just sticking, it's going to keep causing problems. So you must keep and eye on that.. Sometimes the poop will stick to there fur and get hard as a rock and this prevents them from being able to go. Check the temp as to where you have him in, if he's two days old his temp should be at 95 perhaps it's higher and causing his poop to dry up and stick to him causing the clog..

Hmm, it was right at 96 degrees when I popped them in there, but they were all huddling as far away as they could get, so I raised it some until they appeared comfy all over the place. Could be that the co-op had them too cold and he just got a little run down. He was all alone directly under the heat for about a day until he snapped out of it. It's been a little nutty as far as weather here - got up to 75 in the house without heat/air on. Opened the door to let some of the heat out - but at night we still have to have a fire banked.

Yeah, no squirts for him yet. The others you can hear when they go all the way across the room.

I'll just keep on....

I put iodine on the navel. Washed the poop off the butt with an epsom salt soak tonight. I don't want to hover over them as they're so flighty, so I might be missing when he eats - I've not seen any of the others eat and they're huge. I've seen him drink though. He put up waaay more of a fuss tonight than he did last night. He just seems so small.

If he's not squirting his not drinking enough, try to dropper feed more water into him

For what it's worth, we did okay with 90˚F the first week for our runners.  Lacrystol, do some breeds need it a bit warmer?

Well the rule of thumb is when you incubate them your temp should be at 100 or 101 depending on the type of bator. Once they are out and fluffed up you lower the temp by 5 degrees so that would start you off at 95, each week you lower it 5 more degrees until. The temp outside is the same temp as your bator..

Ok I wouldn't soak him anymore, just take a Qtip with warm water and clean around his poop area that's about all he needs right now.. He's smaller because he hasn't fully gotten it together yet. He needs to keep up the drink, the electrolytes and probiotics in his water is going to help him a lot. I believe one or the other makes them hungry can't remember which one though, but I do know both packages help with pasty butt..
