Duckling Niacin Deficiency?

Does anyone know how long it takes a duckling to show signs of improvement from niacin deficiency?
Maybe a few days to a few weeks depends on the duckling, what kind of bedding are they on? any thing slick like newspaper can cause legs problems too. be sure when you get the niacin it's just plain niacin 100-150mg. and not time released of flush free. also about heat while your out why not pick up an thermometer so you can tell exactly what the temps are in your brooder, from hatch to 1 week temps at 90* each week there after drop by 5* you don't want big fluctuations in the temps in their brooder especially if you have one fighting something. and putting cold compress on a very young duckling may cause it to chill, I would just give it the niacin and see how the baby is in a few days. also stop the antibiotics, very young to be taking something like that. Can you give them a warm bath where they can be in for a few minutes may start at 5 mins, just enough water to top of legs where you can see if this baby can use it's legs at all? being sure not to let the water get cold and out of drafts, plus when you get them out dry off and right back under lamp. water therapy is an excellent way to build muscle and help with circulation,.forgot to say mix the niacin in a gal of water then add to their waterer.http://metzerfarms.blogspot.com/2011/03/are-my-ducklings-leg-problems-due-to.html

I just read the whole thread.

What type of bedding is in the brooder?
I would advise getting a thermometer so you can monitor the temp better. It should be 85-90 this week directly under the lamp. Put food and water at the perimeter of the heat.
As long as you are 100% you can dry her completely, try giving her a little swim time (5-10 minutes) in a warm (85-90*) sink. She will need to be dried off completely afterwards.

I just gave her a short 'bath'. She chooses to just sit there but I can swish the water and she'll kick her legs, both of them a bit. So she can use them, just not with much strength. I'm also wondering if they're swollen at the hock / elbow because she's just been sitting for the last few days. Will stop the antibiotics today and keep giving her baths to increase the strength in her legs. Thanks for your advice

Her bedding is forage hay
Okay I am wondering if trying to walk on this thick hay maybe presenting a problem. hay is so stringy and I would think kinda hard for a duckling to walk on, could you put them on pine shaving for a while to see if you notice a difference? get reg. shaving not the fine kind that like saw dust. or even some old towels just to see if this makes any difference in her ability to walk. swelling could be coming from the way she has been holding her legs. just hard to say unless you are willing to take your duckling to a vet. But warm water therapy 2-3 times a day should help.

Ok thank you. She is now on pine shavings and off antibios.

Would you recommend making her a sort of hammock, like this video
to get the weight off her legs?

That would be up to you, why not see if there is any improvements today, keep doing the water therapy, start the naicin, and maybe some very simple leg motion exercises. after she has soaked in the warm water, bring her out lightly wrapped in her towel, and just kind of move her legs in gentle motion. like physical therapy. not any thing hard or fast just gentle motion. and please give updates along the day to let us know how she is doing.

Keep up the good work and I hope she improves Miss Lydia and jdywntr give wonderful advice they've helped me a lot so your in good hands and remember ducklings are strong little fighters ive seen this first hand so keep the hope.
