When can my duckling go out in the pen with the adult ducks? I already have him outside but he is in a pen off the ground with all the baby ducks and chickens. Thanks!!

Hi Heather (my name is Heather too

How old is your duckling? When he can go in with the grown-ups depends a lot of them and on you. It can be dangerous for him to be alone with them until he is full grown, and even then the first bit has to be supervised.

My ducks free-range during the day, so I have been putting the ducklings outside in a pen where the other ducks can investigate but not actually reach them. The first thing I would do, in your case, is get them used to each other by having the adjacent to each other for a few days. If they seem to get along okay through the wire, you can give them supervised visits in the same pen (or outside the pen under your very close watch).

Even if they seem to get along, though, I wouldn't leave them alone together for long periods until the ducks are close to the same size. Aggression can break out fairly quickly, and a smaller duck is vulnerable to injury. However, by letting them be together as much as is practical as early as possible, you will ease the transition for later.

Have fun,

Heather
