Hello,

I have a duckling that hatched and has been having a slow going at it. all his mates are in the other pen but this little guy seems to be having a harder time. I have now noticed that he only uses one leg as the other one seems to be limp along with the webbed feet. has anyone ever had this and it takes time for them to gather strength? he is 5 days old.

Hi!

He should be walking on both feet. Can you see anything wrong with the one he's dragging or if it's his hip?

Do you have them on duck/waterfowl feed? Just making sure, as it could have been that the mother was short on niacin (B3), perhaps when she laid the eggs, and so his yolk didn't have as much as he needed from the start.

I would get some Brewers or Nutritional yeast for him, or you can buy B3 drops.

Hopefully this does the trick and he'll be using that foot in a few days.

Yes, I’ve have had ducklings that took forever to really get with it. I wish I could tell you how long it took, but I assure you that it took at least 5 to 7 days.
I want to give you hope, but I need you to understand this is not a promise that nothing is wrong.
One thought is to be sure the leg is in the socket. Another, remembering that ducklings don’t have the oil gland needed for unsupervised swimming, is water therapy.
Fill up the sink or deep bowl.
