Duckling won't stand, walks poorly

It took a few days for me to put it all together. One duckling keeps stepping on its own feet and this makes it hard for her to walk... but she has stopped gaining much weight for a couple of weeks, and won't stand straight. She stays hunched over (runner duck but stands like a mallard). Another walks funny, but his appetite is good. Yet he finds walking harder and harder. The third, the biggest duckling, has not kept up his weight gain and now doesn't want to stand up. All of a sudden I am thinking niacin deficiency. Yes, I add yeast to the chick starter regularly. But they have moved from crumbles to pellets and I wonder if all the yeast isn't sinking to the bottom. Only certain ducks are willing to eat the "dust" at the bottom, so some are getting more yeast than others. My ducklings are seven weeks old. I plan to feed yeast individually for a few days and switch to an all-flock food that says ducks and broiler chicks. Any other suggestions? Help! It's my favorite duck that's down...

I automatically think niacin deficiency too. While I have limited experience with waterfowl, I have treated it with my Pekin hen and one of my geese. I put vitamin and electrolyte powder in their water and within about a day, they were fine again. So that's what I would suggest. Good luck to you, and I hope your duck gets back in sorts!

And this is brewer's yeast, right? Not baking yeast.

Slight possibility there may be an infection present.

You could try moistening the feed to keep the brewer's yeast mixed in - and be sure to remove any uneaten feed after 6 to 8 hours to be on the safe side (prevent mold). Or, if you are concerned and don't want to moisten the feed, you could switch to adding B Complex capsule to their drinking water. Use the amount of niacin at 100 to 150 mg per gallon of drinking water to determine the dosage.

UPDATE: 24 hours later... The duck seems worse. She didn't have much appetite so I have been feeding her with an eye-dropper into her crop. Lots of brewer's yeast (people yeast supplement with lots of vitamins and lots of niacin) and I have switched from Nutrena Chick Starter to Purina Flock (something) that says it's for broiler chicks, ducks, etc... I mix the food with water to give it to her. With all the food I have given her she has gained weight for the first time in three days, but she isn't getting up and her legs are worse than yesterday. She lays back on her hocks and her feet are coming up a bit . Yesterday she didn't want to stand up but when she did at least her legs were straighter. Her wings don't quite fold flat either. She looks like a real sick duck. So lots of niacin in the last 24 hours but still getting worse. Any other ideas? (Other two ducklings have also received lots of niacin but no improvement in them yet either. Oh, poops seem normal - as much as a duck is ever "normal." Wet and yucky like the nine other ducklings. Don't know about any infection - no odd smells anywhere, no wounds, everything looks good. She still talks to everyone. Just seems in pain. Oh, and I don't feel any impaction in the crop and the food goes through fine.

Just to add to everything, I now have a sick hen (chicken) with a prolapsed uterus. She had two eggs stuck in there. I got them out, and have bandaged the uterus. It helped that she is completely tame. She laid there quietly while I worked on her. We'll see.

I have spent so much time with my animals and caring for them this summer. I have been reading a lot and really doing the very best that I can. And now it has gotten so hard. When I was young we raised chickens and birds and stuff and I don't remember ever having so many problems. We just gave them chicken food or bird food and they were fine! Three sick ducks of ten and now one very sick chicken of five. Sorry, don't mean to complain. I guess I'm just feeling discouraged. :(

I do wonder if she's got an infection - I might start her on oral antibiotics. I don't do that lightly - but when even B vitamins aren't helping, and it's looking neurological (the leg problems and foot curling), I would consider it.

@casportpony did we not - within the last couple of months - read about someone who got their duckling to a vet and discovered that an infection was interfering with B vitamin uptake, or something like that?

I don't remember...

I sure would like to see a picture of this ducklings poop, 'cause I'm thinking infection, too.

If it's not drinking and eating, it needs fluids, and the best way to do that is with a tube as there is no way to safely give the proper amount with a syringe or dropper. If you can get a tube, I can teach you how to tube.
