I am walking home from a meal out by myself and notice a mother duck and around 8-10 ducklings following her across the road. Being the lover of poultry I am, I cross the road quietly just to observe them for a bit. They cross into some foliage where there is a pond nearby and a meshed fence with a sewer/small waterfall system behind. On observing, I notice one duckling tangled in some twigs so I was prepared to help. I gently and quietly held out my hand and aided, but once freed, the duckling stumbles back and jumps through a hole in the meshed fence. I freeze, because I know this may be a life or death situation for the duckling because it is a 10 feet drop below to rushing water. Extremely slowly, I reach out my hand again but the duckling stumbles back and falls into the water below. I have not seen it since and I am absolutely mortified and very upset. Presumably the sewer tunnel leads to the pond nearby. Do you reckon there is any hope for the little duckling? Do mother ducks remain in the same pond or do they move on? I cannot get the images of the poor thing out of my head.

P.S. I will head back there tomorrow to check it out again.

Thank you.

Hi, welcome to BYC. Well, you did your best, and maybe all is well. If you go back and find them, maybe you could take some photos.....
