Ducklings Shipping Disaster - Meyer Hatchery

Here is a picture of them. 7 weeks old and they don't have holes in their heads - I checked LOL!

The hole is covered by fatty tissue which is why it makes a puff when the feathers grow in. The larger the puff the bigger the hole. Most cresteds don't have issues but it is something to be aware of. If you ever do breed them to another crested 25% will die before hatching and I believe 50% will be crested and 25% will not be crested but will carry the gene. You must have a male crested to get crested offspring. There is quite a bit that goes into breeding crested and it is not for the faint of heart. Some will have medical issues and some will not hatch. It is not worth it to me to breed something that is known to cause problems. They are super cute and I had a male crested. He was quite healthy and did just fine. Be careful with the females though if you ever add males due to them having that hole they can get injured during mating since males grab the heads of females and push them under water. Your girls are super cute!

OMG!!! Their crests are really big... so a really big weak spot then. I will be careful - thanks for explaining!

Might need to make some little helmets for your girls because drakes are extremely rough on ducks heads. Not to make light of this crested thing, but they are in for some rough mating.

I just ordered ducks that are shipping today :( I hope they arrive safely. I asked when I called and they said all ducks are shipped out of CA. They hatched their own chickens and turkeys but not the ducks.

Their ducks come from California. I posted a thread about my experience with this because I ordered ducks from them also believing they came from Polk, Ohio which is only two hours from me. Wish the would at least be honest about this on their website. I am now waiting form my ducks and hoping for the best. I'm sure it is not going to do them much good being stuck in a box traveling from California to Pennsylvania!!!!!
