Ducks 101

That’s how you know you got a good one 😉 me and my hubby are the same way, ain’t no big deal when he comes home to baby ducks in our laundry room🤣

Last summer I went to get JUST feed from TSC and one thing led to another and I bought 3 more ducks. I was driving home and hubby called to make sure I got the feed ok and right on cue

*chirp chirp chirp*

He didn’t even have to ask what was going on, he just says

Oh Yes, when I went to get feed last February they had Khaki Campbell babies. Only 4 so I took the two that looked like girls to me. They stayed in a rubber dry swimming pool in my living room most of the rest of winter and ended up being a boy and a girl. I had to rehome the boy but got another girl from the guy I rehomed her at. The swimming pool took up most of the living room but I kept it cleaned out and we all survived. LOL

Those dang feed runs that turn into ducklings 🤣

You are brave to take on babies in winter, I have yet to do that! I love me some ducklings but it gets to a point where they over stay their welcome in my laundry room 🤣

I think I was more crazy than brave. I used up so many puppy pee pads for them but it kept the smell down. I had always wanted a Khaki Campbell and you only had to buy two so I thought it wouldn't be too bad. We all survived but I would not do it again, lol. (Not unless they had Runner Ducks!!! LOL)

Hello all! :frow

Been awhile since I've posted here. We put off ducks for a bit, but am almost ready to now start building the coop/run!
Its going to be a 4x8 coop and an 8x8 run, I was thinking would 6 ducks be too many?

I think some of that depends on the type you are getting. If they are the big Pekins that may sound a little crowded but if they are the smaller Calls or Mallards they may do just fine. Also the sex of them. Drakes and Hens??? Hopefully only one Drake if so. Good luck with your endeavor.

I know I want Welsh Harlequins and Buff Orpingtons, if I can do 5 or 6 ducks I'd choose one other breed.

I'm going to order all females, so hopefully none end up being male.
Is duckling sexing pretty accurate? I think I heard its more accurate than chicken sexing...
Good luck with your endeavor.
Thank you!

You are most welcome. I ordered my two female Mallards off of Metzer 3 years ago and they were fine. I did want them pinioned and they forgot to do it. I was disappointed in that but other than that they have been very healthy ducks and have given me a lot of eggs over the years. I have heard of people not getting the sex they wanted so I know it is possible but I think it is more rare than common.
