hi, I'm thinking about getting a drake to go with my ducks but would the drakes fight with a cockerel (I haven't actually got the cockerel in with the rest of the flock yet because he is still a chick and is separate with his mother and siblings, but i would be buying fully mature drakes that would be in with the rest before the cockerel)

I have a big free-range flock of both ducks and chickens. The problem I seem to have is NOT drakes and cockerels fighting, but that there is some inter-species mating going on. The cockerels will mount the ducks (AND the drakes) and rip the feathers out of their backs. It hasn't caused any serious injuries yet - the ducks just protest very loudly for 15 seconds or so, and then everyone goes their separate ways.

Will there be hens in with the drakes as well, or just a cockerel? My drakes have never shown an interest in any of my chickens, but if a drake did decide to mount a hen, it could cause serious injury to the hen, as a drakes *ahem* anatomy is very different from a roosters.

Ha, this.

I have chickens, turkeys, geese and ducks. The chickens and turkeys seem to stick to their own but the ganders and drakes seem to - at certain points of the year - mate anything that's remotely waterfowl. Which results in ganders fighting drakes and drakes fighting ganders (or anyone around - for both).

My limited experience is that drakes (I only have Muscovy) are pretty mellow much of the year, it's only spring that they get UNBELIEVABLY fiesty. Roos will pretty much mate a tennis shoe all year round if it thinks the sneaker wants it. I'm not going to say with certainty that your roo and drake will try for different things. I will say that you're going to definitely want your roo to mature fully before you even think about exposing it to other males - chicken or elsewise.
