So you remember growing up in elementary school and they'd talk about whales, and how they'd get food from the plankton in the water without actually swallowing a lot of big food. (Not all whales but many of them.)

I wondered if ducks can get minerals etc from muddy water also, in sort of a similar but different way?

Its odd that it looks like they couldn't get anything in the mud but their instinct to sift through the silty mud is so strong. And I don't think my backyard has many insects....its an arid climate with clay soil. Not to mention their beak shape isn't pointed like you'd think it would be.

So do you think its possible they could be getting some minerals right out of the water?
