Ducks attacked by dog

Just a quick update. She's very perky today and last night she laid an egg. Absolutely shocked when I found it this morning. I really thought the shock would make her stop laying for a while but she only had one day off.

Update (again):

We took Mrs duck to the vet yesterday evening for a checkup. The vet is very pleased with her wounds healing (better than she thought they would be) but there are still some areas that have dead skin that will eventually fall off so we need to keep a close eye to make sure they don't get infected or need staples.

She hasn't been eating well the last 2 days. Only a few grapes, and today I managed to give her dandelions (dandelions are like drugs to my ducks, they go mad over them) so the vet gave me Septrin to give her as well as her Baytril and Metacam just incase it's the start of an infection. I think her being sad about her mate probably has something to do with it too but it's better to be safe.

I think she is coming off the pain killer in the next few days, and will stay on the antibiotics until the wounds are all healed up. Staples don't come out for another couple of weeks and she can't have a bath until the wounds heal completely. So until then I've given her a big tub of water to dunk her head in and she seems to be preening herself a lot. There are feathers everywhere but I'm pretty sure she had started moulting before this all happened anyway.

Her foot seems to be doing very well, the vet was pleased with my splint and gave me some padding to make a better one that was more waterproof. She walked around the house today, following me and honking the entire time. Then she did a poo on the carpet so that's not so good, but my fault really :p

We had a look at the eggs we started incubating today, a few look like they may have either not been fertilized or haven't worked. But I think at least one is looking good so fingers crossed. If we don't get a duck out of this batch though, we will be buying a new duck as soon as Mrs duck is ready to go back outside. We will be building an even safer enclosure for them, and obviously double/triple checking for holes in the fence.

It's going to be a scary couple of weeks hoping that she will be better but she's been very strong so far, the vet has said she is still not out of the woods yet so just got to keep fingers and toes crossed.

Glad to hear she is healing so well, maybe some depression now since her mate is gone, Have you tried putting a bit of warm water on her feed to try and entice her to eat. just try a small amt to see if it does,. When mine are in molt they are off their feed a bit too, so with all shes been through probably to be expected. Just thankful to hear the vet was pleased. When is your egg due to hatch?

Sorry. I agree it may just be that she is stressed/depressed. My ducks just started eating more and I have had them over a week, so it may be nothing!

Eggs went in to the incubator on Thursday the 13th (when the accident happened) so I'm guessing around the 10th April if I've counted right? Luckily I've been through the whole looking after ducklings before so that will be less scary. They are fertilised by the drake that died so if they do hatch I have his babies to remember him by :)

Awe, that will be nice for you! My dog has been breaking through the barrier and going after my ducks... he had one pinned down but I don't think he knows what to do with them?

Thought I'd give an update. She's doing really well. On two types of antibiotics, she's now eating and had stopped heavy breathing so she must have had an infection. Glad I noticed as ducks tend to hide illness. Her feathers are growing back and she's being really naughty again (walking in her food etc) and making happy chirps. Still got a while until shes 100% but I think she will be okay. Eggs are developing nicely so fingers crossed one hatches!
