Ducks killed.

Last week my neighbors called and said that my duks were being chased by a black and white dog, my dad chased the dogs off and only one was killed. My black and white muscovy drake.

Which left me with One blue drake, one brown pied scale, 3 brown pied females, one brown female.

I ended up finding someone to trade me hens for my ducks... She was supposed to pick the ducks up today..
Went outside this morning to cage them up... And all but Big blue were dead!
My neighbors dogs showed up and killed all of the others.

I haven't been around too long on this forum but I've read many of these stories and it's heartbreaking! Is there any way you can at least hold your neighbor accountable for what's been done? Because I'd have a hard time letting that lie if it were me. Poor duckies and I'm so very sorry for your loss.

I'm sorry. You say it's was the neighbors have you spoke with them? did you not lock the ducks up after the dog killed one of your other birds?

I lost two last year, 99% certain it was the neighbors dog, i ended up locking my birds up... and penning the area around their barn. I did speak with the neighbor but i couldn't prove it was their dog and they were admitting nothing BUT magically the dog is now tied up 24/7.

Dogs are probably the worst predator going, simply because they are so common and i don't know about your birds but mine are 100% dog tolerant, which is both good & bad unfortunately.

They were locked up, during the night and I let them out when I am out side.
I got sick yesterday and wasn't able to lock them up last night. My neighbors are being great about it!
It's just a bummer that they were killed the night before!


My frien ended up giving me the hens anyways, she said she really was only interested in big blue!

Did you talk to them the first time? No offense but they aren't being great neighbors if they are letting their dog run loose to begin with and especially if they are letting it loose after you talked to them.

I've lost more chickens to dogs than any other predator. The first time, I found a neighbor's dogs in our pasture, where my birds ranged, they'd killed at least 2, 1 unaccounted for. Talked to neighbor. No problems. 4 months later (about a month ago), 1 dog was back, killed a hen and a roo. I reported it to the sheriff. Neighbor came over, apologized said they'd been so good for 4 months (on the chain), reimbursed me and told me the sheriff shot one dog when he went to tell them about the complaint. I told him I would have shot it if it was still on our property when I got out there and that I could have had a warrant sworn on him for having his dog loose. He said the one won't be a problem and the other he'll get rid of or shoot himself.

2 days ago, I saw a dog outside, never saw it before. I shot at the ground to give it a good scare. After head count, I found 1 out of 10 2 week old chicks and its mother missing. Found the chick, no sign of mom. Now I'm raising more babies. Needless to say, if a dog steps on our property near the birds and I have a shot, I will shoot. It is legal here, even if the dog isn't doing anything.

Frankly, it stinks that we have to deal with this. I can deal with wildlife taking a bird but I have no patience or compassion for a person that can't control their "pet". I would make sure that your neighbor is taking care of the problem, for good.

I am sorry for your loss. I'd at least talk to the lady you were trading with and find out how much she wants for the chickens and have the neighbor pay that. (sorry I ranted a bit too)

I am so sorry JW you have lost some of you flock to roaming neighbors dogs, I keep 2 guns loaded just in case here, I will not tolerate someones dogs coming on to my property and killing or harassing my flock, I keep my dogs home and expect everyone else to do the same. I would absolutely hate to have to kill someones pet but to me someone letting their dog run loose doesn't care much about them anyway.

I love my dogs. I have 6. But I take care of my dogs and I know where they are. IF one of my dogs got out and was shot because of it, I'd be sad but it would be my fault. I do not agree with the statement "its a dog being a dog". My dogs are raised around birds and respect them. If I had a dog that would kill birds, I'd keep it under lock and key or rehome it. I would not always shoot a dog if it was in the front of the house but it depends. We also get dogs dumped up here. The dogs that came in crossed through 10 acres of cow pasture and then 2 acres of our property before they got to the chickens.

Unless you have lost a bird to a roaming "pet" I don't know that you could understand. A year ago I would have said there would be no way that I would shoot a dog but why should a dog have more rights than my chickens? I would rather be shot than die the way my chickens did, torn to shreds, rib cages broken open.
