Ducks-Nature's antidepressant

Yep, I'm in a dark place myself since my husband recently passed away. My critters have been my saving grace so far. I have to admit, the ducks are the most comical next to young chickens learning to free range and testing out those wings.

I'm so sorry, crj, for your loss.
I'm glad you have little critters around to help make you smile. Ducks are just the sweetest little things!
The best part is when they actually LET you hold them and aren't quacking and wiggling trying to get away from you and when they snuggle into your neck.

I'd have to agree with all above. I finalized my divorce last month (something i swore i would never do to my children) and i have been unable to see much to smile about lately. However, i recently brought home 6 rabbits, 10 chickens, and 4 ducks (my cat thinks i have lost my mind). I have come to look forward to going throught the process of taking care of them, and enjoy sharing them with the kids. The "critters" have helped to brighten my day, every day since i have brought them home. It's nice to have them.

I used to always feel better faster when I had a baby duck when I felt myself getting low. It always helped. Last year I had a bad patch at work and thats when I started filling the bator. I kind of got used to hatching every week and having SO MANY babies around all the time not only lifts my spirits- but keeps me so busy I dont have time to think about the negative things. Its a lot of work- and some days after work I couldnt be bothered cooking or cleaning...but I alway care for the duckies and clean all the brooders, and give them a swim. BY the end of the night I am exhausted...but happy after spending so much time with them.

Summer evenings spent outside just sitting watching them is so relaxing. Sitting watching TV with a duckling...or ten on your lap is so fun. I couldnt imagine my life without my babies. Having a little fragile life that depends on you for everything is something to make you feel you want to get out of bed in the morning for.

: ) There is something calming about them. They are so sweet. Sorry for your losses, but glad the ducks are bringing some sunshine in.

I agree 1000%, my husband had to go to Afghanistan as a Civilian Contractor for a year, and we just got word he is taking on another year over there due to this wonderful economy! NOT!! But if it wasn't for the 1st two(Mom and Dad) and incubating these 9 babies, I don't know how we could have gotten through these last 11mths, and what the next 12 mths will be?? Who knows! But the ducks have been a God send, natures anti-depressant. Brought a smile to all of our faces, even my dh laughs and he has said prior to these ducks, NO BIRDS in this house. LOL, little did he know his opinion would change. Ducks are a learning tool.

MY DUCKS CHANGED MY LIFE !!!! enuff said.

I just love ducks. Last summer I got 56 chicks. The following week 5 ducks arrived. They stole our hearts like nobody's business. I told my DH that if I had known before ordering what I knew then, I would have ordered lots more ducks. So, fastforward 6 months....still love the ducks and enjoy the cickens (down to 31 after the cockerals went away). I have 10 Welsh Harlequins and 6 assorted geese coming in the spring. DH just shakes his head. He loves the eggs but doesn't want me building more coops. Hmmm, maybe a lean to on one of the current coops.....

I agree.......I love my ducks and geese. After a long streesful day of life in general...I love going to spend time with them and do my ducky chores. And I love spending summer morning sharing a tea with my ducks or a cuddle on the lawn with my 4 geese. People who don't have birds just don't know. And I love sharing my joys with my 4 year old son who loves them as much as I do and his school also. I always give his school free eggs, ducklings...what ever I can. I think everyones life should be touched by a duck.
