Campbells are supposed to be the best layers. I have Pekins and they lay more than we eat. Pekin are generally strong ducklings and good mothers. Mine set 2 or 3 times a year.
Pekins also have very strong wings . If you plan to be handling you ducks i'd go with a more lightweight duck like a runner.
Now for Q's by LilRalphieRoosmama
I've always wanted a duck - is it true that they don't have to swim? We don't have a pond but would a pen with a kiddie pool work? A kiddy pool will work. we have one for our guys. They do need a pallet to hop up on to get in and a rock inside to step out on when the water gets low.
I'm in the 'burbs - are ducks any noisier than roosters?
Ducks make noise at all hours of the night just like some roosters. i wouldn't say their more noisier individually, but when 1 goes they all go. 2-3 Should be equal to the rooster
Can you just have one or do they get lonely?
THEY GET LONELY! Ducks love being in groups. Some ducks have been known to drownd themselves out of depression from loosing a mate or just being lonely. Buy 2
Can you keep them in the same pen with chickens outdoors?
Yes you can, but in general Drakes and roosters aren't real friendly. sometimes the hens prefer the drakes. Chickens also peck more and ducklings have soft skin and no defense. I'd keep mine seperate.
What about winter?
Sorry i live in TX and winters no problem. I assume you just give them a heated water bowl like dogs.
