We had our wood pellets delivered today and as the pellet truck was backing up, DH told the driver "Don't hit the chicken run or the old lady'll be ticked." So, in his effort to spare my biddies, he clonked into a 200 yr old northern white cedar tree and tore a big gash down to the sapwood.

I know the tree will recover but has anyone tried duct-taping a tree? (yes, we watch the Red Green Show--we ARE close to Canada, eh?) or is there something we should spray on it to hasten healing?

Thanks

There is a black, paint on wound sealant for trees- and I can't remember the specific name right now!

But any plant nursery should carry it.

It will seal it against bugs and disease. Duct tape will allow moisture to seep underneath, which will allow growth of fungus and mold. Both of those can eventually kill the tree.

Hey, points for DH warning about the chickens, and for the driver- he missed the run!

As I told both of them, "I'd rather you knick the tree than the hens. The tree will heal, my dead chickens won't."

The hubbys family has a big landscape business down south he said they use normal black spray paint its cheaper and does the trick. Hope its helps

So Michigan doesn't have those fancy do-hickeys called rear view mirrors?

I had to look at this thread just to see if the OP was in Arkansas. Round here people only find it necessary to keep two things in their emergency household repair kit.
Duct tape - in case it moves and it shouldn't.
WD 40 - in case it should move and doesn't.

I'll bet if I drive around a mile or so I could find some trees with duct tape on them. Right below the deer stands.

Yep I have used duct tape on a tree branch... left it in situ on that branch for over a year..... it worked a treat..... perhaps you could paint and then duct tape to give the branch added strength.
