2 months ago i lost 9 of my hens to a pack of fox's and today just my luck i lost 6 to a pack of coyotes i found large numbers of foot prints and we do have a coyote that sits outside the house windows and stares at you ( its kinda scary )....

i now have 2 hens and a roo. now you would think the rooster would protect the hens somewhat or give himself up at sacrifice but no he flys into a tree and leaves my ladies to fend for themselves i wanna kill this roo he is just such a chicken ( thats a knee slapper there huh? ) so the coyotes killed my favroite hen ( she walks up to the back door and walks inside eats all the ants and everything it was a nice thing ) and killed 5 other ones the only 2 i have left are beacause they ran onto my front porch ( the coyotes wont get that colse to doors cause they know we will come out with a wepon ) anyway the 2 hens i have left came onto the porch and hid behind the chairs and baby stroller that are just sitting up on our porch and the rooster was 10 feet up a tree..... now the bad part about this is 3 of our neighbors hate the chickens the rest love them ( cause they get eggs for helping out when we are on vacation ) anyway everyone gets a pretty good deal. but now we will be getting like one egg a day and i am not to stoked about that cause 5 people every morning wanting bacon and eggs will not be too happy it stinks.....

so i have 2 more months before my new chicks start laying that i got at 4 or 5 weeks old so there about 2 months old and i wish they where older i bought 12 hens but got 11 cause of a surprise roo but its okay so yeah and i have a egg that finaly hatched that has taken me over 2 or 3 months of trying and have tried with 30 diffrent eggs but my makshift incubator didnt work then all of a sudden going in to check the humidity there was a chick trying to pop out of its shell.... so i now have what i belive is another roo ( i tried sexing it or whatever and i belive it is indeed a 3rd roo... ) but he thinks i am his mommy and is currently talking up a storm and cuddling my neck.

anyway im just putting it out there...

I HATE COYOTES!!!

they do have a pen and a coop with wire under and over the 7 foot pen walls.......... the mistake is both times they've gotten killed ... my brothers didn't lock them up... they where the only ones home so you think they would remember but no they didn't......

Lock up the chickens. Run a couple strands of hot wire around the coop/run. Loose chickens in an area with a high population of predators is like a cheese burger left in the dog run. You can't expect them to ignore it! Especially when they are raising young.

Are you sure it was packs of coyotes/foxes or is there a chance it was neighbor dogs?

Your rooster cannot protect your hens in the face of this type of attack. All he can do is give a warning. Some roo's will die trying to hold off an attacker, others head for the hills. Or the tree's in this case. Can't really blame 'em.

If the things just sit outside your window and look at you should have shot them a long time ago. Not doing that is just kind of asking for trouble. Try using some box traps or some steel foottraps around the place were they usually come in your yard at

Do you have a rifle? The next time the coyote wants to sit and stare at you, crack a window open and ventilate his head. Like the previous poster said, I WISH they would make it that easy for me.
