Now you see why we all should pay more attention when we watch "Good Eats" i remember he did a whole show about cabbage and its history.
I know artichokes are from southern europe, where i think cabbage comes from too.Cabbage origines from a wild mustard plant.
Carrots come from the middle east, they are thought to be of Afghan origin.
Broccoli is another member of the wild cabbage family and hails from europe.
Cucumbers are of asian origin and grow wild in India.
Squash comes from around Mexico.

I learned that even though they are like the national food of Ireland, and the French fry them, The Potato actually comes from here in America!!!!!!!!!!!!

Watch Alton Brown on Good Eats. He's always running down the origins of the foods we eat. I saw one show where he did corn and you would not recognize the original corn which was called Maize. It was a little bitty nubby head of seeds not at all like a corn cob we know today. It was hardly any bigger than your thumb. It was just a grass they grew and cultivated until it is what we have now. Today's corn is probably the most genetically engineered food on the planet. It's genes have been sliced and diced up thousands of times to get an ear of corn that is just right and that farmers can harvest over a hundred times the volume that the Meso-Americans could on the same acre of land. The same is true for all the other foods we grow, including chickens. Consider that today's chicken resembles a jungle fowl running around in Southeast Asia about as much as a Ford Fuson resembles a Model T almost a hundred years ago.
