dumb run question

Thanks for the suggestion.

I've learned so much this morning, I imagine that just an hour or two here has probably saved us an entire weekend of re-work already.

Make your run tall enough to stand in without bumping your head.

Hardware cloth along the bottom 2ft is probably enough. 2 X 4 welded wire fencing, or chain link, or poultry netting above should do the trick. The top can be anything, lightweight netting etc.

Definitely add a door to get in. Something will require that you get in the run.

Can't critters climb? We have some pretty daring raccoons around here that I doubt would have trouble climbing six feet and tearing up some netting. Or am I over-thinking this?

No, you're not overthinking. A raccoon could certainly do that. You could get away with it if your chickens are closed inside the housing every night, as most of your climbing predators are nocturnal. Dogs and hawks seem to be the primary daytime predators for most folks, except maybe those in the wildest of settings...

I have a grow out pen with the run 4 feet tall. I won't be doing that again. It never fails that with chicks or young pullets at least one will get scared and not follow the rest into the coop and you have to go in and get them. This is not a whole lot of fun in the rain.
A 3' run will work but a 6' run will make life easier.

I got a used dog (chain link) pen and covered the bottom 18-24 inches with chickenwire and stretched chicken wire over the top and secured it all around with wire ties. It seems secure so far. It's tall enough for me to walk in slightly stooped over. I recently covered the top with a tarp to keep some of the rain out, too much mud.
