It's not just a turkey thing. We've had some young chickens that are "dumb" in the same way, especially if they get panicked or stressed. I mean, they can be in a pen they've gone in and out of dozens of times and then suddenly one day it's like they're in totally unfamiliar territory and can't find the gate they've gone through dozens of times. 
We actually named two such pullets Dingbat and Dipstick, poor things. Lol
