Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat - Part 2 : Chicken Boogaloo.

Also, I've decided that the next time some nitwit tells me they only like the white eggs, I'm gonna ask them what color cow they insist their hamburgers come from. Maybe I've been missing out on the best tasting beef because of my silly assumption that cowhide color makes no difference.

Our mailman stopped in a few days ago, we live in a rural enough area that if he sees us in the yard he just comes down the driveway and brings us the mail instead of putting it in the box, and we got to talking about chickens since ours all run out to see him when he arrives. He's in the midst of a 100% Easter Egger flock and when I asked why he went that route he told me (straight faced and serious) that the green eggs are noticeably sweeter and that everyone knows they are much lower in cholesterol than white and brown eggs. He sells them to co-workers who only by the "healthy green eggs". When he asked why we have a mixed flock with only one EE in it so far I just smiled and said that we liked variety in our lives. He's a really nice man and I didn't want to correct him and risk offense.

Sounds like a very nice person, albeit a misinformed one. And, if he believes the green eggs are sweeter, more power to him. I'm glad you didn't offend him. It's the arrogant know-it-alls I'm gunning for: you know, the ones who inform you that they'd *nevah* eat a nasty backyard egg. Only the very best factory production white eggs will pass their lips. Natural selection is a wonderful thing.

I think I'd be tempted to ask him, very sweetly of course, if he had an article or study on it that I could read. I would tell him, quite truthfully, that I'd never heard of green eggs having a different taste or nutrient content and would like to know more.

Bee, in the early 80's Mother Earth News actually published several articles about the benefits of eating 'colored' eggs. Now a'days we can thank Martha Stewart for reperpetuating that myth!

I wouldn't call either source credible.

But, if he's happy living in The State of Denial, why burst his bubble? It's not like he's trying to convince her *she's* wrong. According to the story, she asked why he had all EE's and he responded that he thinks the eggs are sweeter. A little weird, but nowhere did he try to influence her, or tell her she was wrong for having other breeds. So, live and let live. But, the minute they try to tell me how I *should* live, I bring out my big ole hat pin, and KAA-POW goes their bubble!

Because he's a nice man and a friend tells you the truth..if they care about you, that is. Imagine him telling that to other folks and them snickering behind his back...or telling it on a chicken forum so that others can derive amusement from it. If I really liked him I'd try to explore why he thinks those things and help him out if I could. Ignorance may be bliss but there's nothing wrong with learning either, especially if it's done tactfully and in kindness.

Depends on how well I knew him if I'd try to help him out, thus my "tempted" in my post. Tempted, but may not follow through, depending upon how much I cared about the fella.

Not dumb, not silly, just simply refreshing: I picked up a new egg customer last week. She took home a dozen eggs, and asked for a dozen the next week. Before the weekend, she called me and asked if she could have 2 dozen, instead. So, today, when I showed up at church toting a box full of eggs, she ran me down to get her eggs. Her husband commented to my husband that those eggs were SOOOO GOOD! Gotta love it when people appreciate a good thing!

Also, interesting to note: While I was collecting eggs for hatching, I was giving the flock 1/2 of an adult multi-vitamin crushed up in their feed every day. (16 birds) My egg count went up to 10 - 11/15. After finishing collecting, I stopped the vitamins. Egg count dropped to 6 - 8/15. I'm gonna start giving them their vitamins tomorrow!
