Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat - Part 2 : Chicken Boogaloo.

As others have said, good for you! I have had chickens only for a short period of time but I grew up with them years ago and even still I had to do a lot of reading first. Now that I have chickens I always get people asking me if I want more because they don't know what to do with theirs. I don't understand why people get animals, be they pets or for production, without first understanding the responsibility involved.

I mean, I guess I need to stop assuming that everyone had the same upbringing as I but my parents taught me responsibility as a boy with many things but pets in particular because they are living breathing things that require a lot of time, energy and care. Heck, that is even something we picked up from sitcoms growing up. The old, daddy I want a puppy skit.

That aside, I don't find that roosters make good pets. Out of 7 I have one and only one that is semi friendly.

-------

As for the original post: I have people tell me that they won't eat brown eggs because they taste funny and are rubbery. I will give them that fresh eggs DO taste a little different but not by much and in a good way, at least I think so. My brother tells me that my nephew checks the eggs in the fridge to make sure they are white eggs because he does not want to eat those funny brown eggs. If he has to check what they look like, he is not tasting the difference but associating it with color...Growing up we paid extra for farm fresh brown eggs at local markets. Sigh...

I fear for the future of our society. People who won't eat anything except white eggs, or who want a rooster for a pet, are voting for the next leader of our country. And, we'll have to live with the outcome.

I don't agree with it bud oddly enough, lots of people have house chickens and yes, even house roosters and roos as pets. Or at least I've seena few people with it. But of course it's usually the friendly breeds or bantams, like silkies, etc. But not always. Some of them even get along with the dogs and other animals lol I guess it could be a nice idea and he'd get a lot of attention but personally I think it's kind of dumb because even if he had your constant attention or wasn't aggressive, he still should be with some flock mates.... it's like when people get rats, mice, guinea pigs, ferrets, rabbits, etc. But only get one, they're really social and need a friend even if you spend a lot of time with them. Rabbits could probably do okay alone but yeah. Kinda selfish to keep a chicken, especially a rooster, inside without a flock. I don't get why anyone would want a house rooster anyway. Seems he'd bring germs in. And the chicken diapers some people put on them seem undignified

He did not want a house rooster. He did not want a pet. He wanted a 'lawn ornament'. My roosters are not particularly great pets. I aim for 'not a complete jerk'.

Sorry, was more replying to 7 biddies thing above mine about people wanting roosters as pets, i agree with what you said. Although i do admit i did think maybe he wanted a pet but clearly he didn't and what you just revealed makes him seem like an even bogger jerk. I bet he's the type that gets a puppy then returns it after its no longer cute and they "cant handle it" :/ and haha well that's a decent goal, as long as they can protect the flock, right?

I have named the cockerel I ended up keeping only because he is so cool in coloring
he is my avatar Blue or Stew is his name.. if he ever thinks he is the bigger bird
he will be stew
