I agree - I've had the same experiences here with chickens and barn cats. The few that I like well enough to name are always the first to get eaten by something.

Oh man I was looking for a thread like this yesterday!!!! I was FB and saw a video that was actually really cool. Some students and their teacher in Japan had perfected a method of incubating chicks to hatch out of their eggshells!! So I decided to read the comments....big mistake. I went from amazed by the brilliance of some people to ashamed at how idiotic others are.
Multiple people said that a chicken laying an egg is just like a woman menstruating!!
Like really not only do you not know anything about the anatomy of a bird and how their reproduction works but you don't know that it is nothing like any mammals including humans.
Another person was going off on how factory chickens can only live for 2 years because they are forced to lay so many more eggs than a natural chicken. And how no chickens can be happy because they are forced to have a period a day instead of 12 a year like they should!!!
There were a lot of comments too on how they will never look at an egg the same again or eat one...because you know a chick can come from it.

I've used that line many times to explain how I get eggs without a rooster around. It's the easiest way to explain to people who think all eggs are fertile and that you can't get eggs without a rooster how I get eggs without a rooster (and why the eggs I get will not turn into baby chickens if I don't put them into my refrigerator). When I say it, I don't mean that the anatomy and physiology of it are the same as a mammal, but I am using it as an explanation for why a rooster isn't needed. Like, a human female doesn't need a man around to drop an egg, same thing with a hen. It's something people can understand. Most people don't want or need a lecture on bird anatomy and physiology.
Most of my pullets/hens get names. Only the keeper boys get named, and only after I'm sure that they are sticking around for a few months. I've got 6 unnamed cockerels that need to be dealt with this weekend.

Out of 12 birds, 2 hens still don't have names. That's just because nothing has really come to me yet for them. Honestly though, I don't care about eating a named bird. Friend: "What's for dinner?" Me: "Wyatt, with a side of yellow rice and some broccoli."
I haven't done it yet, but that's mainly because I don't really want to hand pluck, and we're not in a position to get the pluckers.

Our worst predators are foxes and the foxes couldn't care less whether a chicken has a name or not. No, they're smarter than that. They figure out exactly how much, if anything you've paid for each and every chicken or which chickens are the absolute favorites. Then those are the ones they go after. Someone muct be feeding them the information.

Sorry but chickens don't have a uterus so no they don't have anything resembling menstruation (which is the shedding of the lining of the uterus). If you used ovulation as an example that would make more sense as it's the release of an egg. Telling people that laying an egg is like a woman having her period it is perpetuating stupidity instead of educating. It also is bound to gross people out as food and menstruation aren't exactly things that go hand in hand.
