Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat - Part 2 : Chicken Boogaloo.

At fair, I always answer questions people ask in the poultry barn, and for every 20 dumb questions, someone (sorta) restores my faith in humanity. A group of four people walked in (maybe 2 years ago?) and asked about egg color, as a pen of barred rocks had some brown eggs on top of the cage and some leghorns had white. I explained that it was basically like a paint color that is applied to the shell as it is being laid, and that the color played no part in nutrition, just as an identical red car and a yellow car were still the same inside. Anyway, someone asked how you could guess the color eggshell before they laid, and I showed them the earlobe as a general estimate but explained that the breed of chicken is also a good estimate. They thanked me and walked on to the bantams, and when they saw a silkie rooster's blue earlobe. They asked, to the bird's owner, "What color does this one lay? Blue?", and the stunned owner replied only with, "None, because it's a boy." A sensible answer, until the one lady remarked "Oh, so the boys all have BLUE earlobes, and the girls have red and white because they make pink!"
Thankfully, they were nicely set straight by the owner, but I couldn't tell if I wanted to laugh or cry after that. Of course, now it's a little funny.
My hens are going through a lull in production, as all but 2 of my hens are at least four or five years old and molting. We had to buy eggs from the store for holiday baking, and when I looked at the outside of the eggs, it seemed unnatural after having only one hen lay white. Plus, they were bright white and I of course knew they were older than I wanted to think about. My sister visited my coop and mounted a beanie baby chicken's head inside, with a post-it note that says "Unproductive hen of the day".

My dad STILL won't eat any of my chickens' eggs, because they poop(???) Yeah but he's totally okay with the store bought eggs that literally are laid in tiny cages covered in poop and near dead chickens and salmonella... Sheesh...

People are convinced they'll get salmonella from my farm fresh eggs because they sit on the counter for a week until they're all eaten. Also I get no white eggs, just cream, brown, and green, which scares some people off lol. It's sad how little people know about their food.

I think there is far less of a chance of getting salmonella from a farm fresh egg than eggs produced in those awful, dirty "egg factories".

Feather fixer here is like 22$ a bag which is crazy! We go through nearly a bag a day if you include all the grow out cockerals(some of whom will be attending freezer camp this weekend and I'll he so glad when they're gone.) It will also save us a ton of money on feed once we process them all but even a few will help. Its amazing the amount of feed they eat. Especially the cockerals. The chicks are of course actually being fed chick feed. We've been getting 18% layer from our local feed mill and they love it! We've also got meat bird for the quail, but that's about a bag or two a month so not bad. Still they layer is a much much better price! It's amazing how much better a price it is. 7.50 I think per 50lb bag versus 11-13$/50lbs. We can't afford organic and because our birds free range on uncertified land(non-organic) we couldn't claim it any way so there's no point to it. Not that we don't think some things matter as organics. We're not against organics.

About Sully I love love that story and think that would just be awesome! Lol I wonder what they would do if I brought in my Oegb roos next year lol lol sorry I just had a picture in my mind of Santa with my chickens all over his lap and arms chair and even one on his head... It would so happen if I brought the whole flock.

Most all flocks seem to be 18% protein. We upped our previous 16 to 18 because we added guineas. The feed works better for our flock BC they are used to crumbles and don't like pellets.

Not sure where you get your feed but TSC price matches and Rural king has it for 14.99 a bag I think?

So, he doesn't eat steak or bacon because cows and pigs "poop"? Find a living creature that doesn't. Even plants "poop", in a way. Tell him to do what the commercial producers do: wash them in bleach water (I wonder what it looks like after 50 or so eggs have been washed in it?). Better yet, tell him what the Soup Nazi says to unappreciative patrons, "No soup (eggs) for you!"

We don't have a local TSC it's a bit of a drive. We have no rural Kings by us at all. If not for BYC I wouldn't know what that is. Lol

Thank you anyways. I'll keep that in mind about tractor supply though. We usually only make it out there once maybe twice a year. Usually to look at their chicks. Otherwise we get our feeds from Farm and fleet or Brodhead farm and home. That and our special mix layer/flock feed is from our local feed mill.
