Here is my addition to this topic:
My girlfriend buys my eggs for her husband only. She said to me (with a straight face) "I don't eat FRESH eggs". I thought, no you must only eat the yuccky old store-bought ones. She is a hoot in other ways too, but she was serious, she will not even taste one of my eggs.

How do you argue with that? You can't convince someone like this guy!
You can once you show him a dozen of your eggs and no rooster! Unless he thinks you just need one in the area and a neighbor has one.

To one of the previous posters, I am going to sound stupid, being raised in the country, but here it goes, how do you cook beef kidneys? do you have to clean them like a chicken gizzard or liver if you process the hen yourself (the only reason I ask is I don't trust not asking and get it from the local processor and find out somebody got distracted or the new guy on the job didn't clean them at all or not completely and I being ignorant cook it and get sick). I know that is a popular food in England but have no clue how to start on it, or even if my local processor has any to sell. They have stopped selling brains before the mad cow scare, beef and pig brains.

my coworker has 12 chickens and when i built my coop he said i needed straw or woodchips in the ground to keep them off the dusty / dirt. He said he makes sure his cant touch the dirt. Last i remembered they in fact like taking dust baths. My run still had the concrete floor when we got the first chick (i poured concrete in the bottom to keep predators our and allow me to clean it. i put a little topsoil and sand mix in and when it gets some fertilizer ill scoop it out with a flat shovel to my mulch pile and repeat with fresh soil eventually spread mulch pile on my garden ) anyway i let her outside in the afternoons and the first think she did before i had dirt in the floor was go find some dirt and dig a hole and roll in it. Im confident his chickens would love to get in some dirt and roll around. needless to say he insists that soil in the floor is not good for them and it must be straw or wood chips like a hamster cage.

You know, my husband is a newbie to chickens, but he's the one who cleans out the coop, so when he spread straw all over the bottom, I just kept my mouth shut. However, the hens seem to love digging through it for stuff. We do let them out for a few hours every day to free-range, however, and yes, they have enthusiastically dug their dust-baths in our yard.

Had my first really stupid question last night. Had a 4 day old chick with me (she was very late hatching and mama didn't want her-so she is with me if we are going to be gone long) when we went into the store. She was getting cranky and chirping so that people noticed. One lady asked what I had so I showed her the chick (it's black). She asked me what it was and I said a chick. She says well how come its not yellow, is it sick? No it's a maran chick not suppose to be yellow.

So I guess I got two dumb questions last night--another lady asked if it was a duck???? uuuuhhhmmm NO ducks have webbed feet and a bill.

The only problem with dirt might be parasites(worms), so they may think dirt is bad because of that. Dust baths actually help control other parasites(lice and mites), so I think it is better to let them have dirt. Some people put wire in the bottom of the runs and the put straw or pine shavings over it. Chickens running around on concrete can cause bumble foot or other foot problems.

Your idea of putting sand and dirt over the concrete is a great idea.

People never cease to amaze me. The other day a guy pulls in my driveway and tells me he wants eggs. OK, we go through the formalities, how much and all and says he wants 2 dozen. Then he says "are they fresh?' .So I say yeah one box is 4 days old the other 3. He says "4 days I don't want them if they are 4 days". What the heck does this guy expect? Told him he was free to follow the girls around to wait for fresh ones. Told him I would have those sold by the end of the day that he didn't want them. Also told him that I can't keep eggs in fridge and that there was no guarantee that I would have any later during the week that I have a steady flow of customers. He took them. It is nice to have such great demand otherwise I would have put up with this codger.
